Most rooms need a rug - a room without a rug can seem unwelcome and unfinished. It will transform a room and give a feeling of luxury, especially if it is of good quality and has a high level of craftsmanship. The colour, pattern and texture of the rug will give the room a feeling of comfort and personality.
Some furniture styles work best when the furniture is not on the rug. Smaller pieces of furniture such as side tables are generally best either on the rug or off the rug rather than half-and-half. In this case the rug should be slightly longer and wider than the furniture and not too far away from the seat.
For a bedroom, it is best to put the rug under the bed and frame it, but leave it in front of the side tables.
